Goodbye Memphis, California here I come...

This is definitely the best honeymoon I've ever been on! I'm just concerned that my next one might involve a nagging bird!

So, I've now left Memphis and I'm in San Francisco, but first, let me fill you in on my last night in Memphis...

There was no way I was gonna leave Memphis without at least one hangover so decided I'd hit Beale Street a bit larger than I had previously......started off in BB Kings Blues bar.......and yep, got landed with a half rack of ribs by some Croatian (??) waiter (who insisted on talking to me for ages cos he recognised my London accent and wanted to tell me the Spurs score in the Champions League, even though I'd already told him I hate them).... I ended up sitting at the bar drinking straight Jack Daniels (Tennesse whiskey....so I had to didn;t I?).......

I felt the need to bless Memphis with some Elvis Karaoke, so I wandered (staggered) down the road to the nearest bar that would let me sing. There was literally me, the barmaid and the Karaoke man in this bar that must hold at least 150 people so I put in my request (Suspicious minds of course).... I ended up doing another couple of songs but by this time there was a grand total of 9 people in there, although I did get a round of applause (probably cos I'd stopped singing)...!

I thought I'd make my exit whilst I was still on top so I walked down to my new local, 'The Flying Saucer' and ordered a coors lite......my new favourite beer (only while I'm over here) and I managed to make friends with two older fella's who were sitting next to me at the bar....it turned out that one of 'em works at the hospital where Elvis; dad was taken when he was ill before Elvis died......he reckons he met Elvis and he spoke to him....I so wanted to believe him that I bought him a beer....he seemed pretty genuine be fair and was about the right age. His mate, Mryon Jones, became my best buddy! By the way, he never looked Welsh (if you get my meaning).... My sensible side got the better of me and I went to bed about 1am as I had to get up and sort my stuff out cos was flying out today to San Fran.

Once I'd had my blueberry pancakes for breakfast, I ordered a cab and went off to Memphis airport....funny thing is, if you;re on an internal flight in the States, they are not half as hot on security as they are when you are flying in from elsewhere....I never even had to show my passport! odd. Anyway, I went through to the terminal and had two hours to kill before my flight so I was struggling with what to do......sent a few random texts, rang my mum, etc etc and then....I saw the Elvis Presley gift shop!! I realised I had come all the way to Memphis and I absolutley needed a pair of Elvis' gold sunglasses (you know the one's).  I went into the shop and picked a pair up and bought them off the lady at the counter for $14.99 + tax (they were $25.00 at Graceland! Result!)...I asked her if she could take the tag off them so I could wear 'em and she went and got her mate with the scissors from the other part of the shop.......

Anyway, her mate comes over and say's, she will only take the label off them if I can stand there with my thumbs in my pocket whilst waearing the glasses whilst doing an Elvis impression (I'm absolutely serious!)......well guess what happened.... the conversation went something like this:

Me: "I can do better than that darling, I'm one of the biggest Elvis impersonators in London"
Lady: " No, really?"
Me:...whilst holding her hand (I really am serious here) I put the glasses on, and started singing " Are you lonesome tonight? do you miss me tonight? are you sorry we drifted apart?" I must admit I thought I put in a decent rendition...

Her and her mate went nuts and started asking me to have pictures with 'em!! Trust me, I have evidence!

They were both in at least their late 50's!

I had to get two plabes to San Fran and landed here safely so all is good...spent tonight finding my bearings and I'm literally on Fisherman's wharf so bang in the middle of everything..... I continued my weight loss programme tonight and went straight out for dinner! Be fair I hadn't eaten since breakfast! I thought, 'when in rome' so I went straight to the harbour and ordered Crab and a seafood salad.....I've switched codes! Memphis was all about the pork....San Francisco is all about the seafood (which has got to be slightly healthier hasn't it)

Anyway, I'm going to bed now as I want to try and sort out tickets for Alcatraz tomorrow if I can. By the way, I got my first glimpse of the golden gate bridge tonight....very excited about that.....gonna go and have a proer look tomorrow but San Francisco seems good so far.

  1. OMG, I so want to be there, I can't believe you sang at the airport but I fully expected the karaoke in Memphis!! Why was you not interested in the Tottenham game? it was amazing, and Arsenal lost last night lol. Does it smell on Fishermans Wharf? I've heard it does. Have fun at Alcatraz, can't wait to hear about it!!
